What is Permanent Makeup?

Permanent makeup or PMU is when a micro-pigmentation is implanted into the skin, either by a hand tool or a machine. Essentially, permanent makeup is a tattoo that resembles makeup to enhance a certain feature of your face, such as beautiful brows or a defined lash line. Here are Modern Beauty Bar we specialize in Microblading, Ombre Power Brows, Powder Brows, Signature Combination Eyebrows & Lash Enhancement PMU.

The Benefits:

  • Long-lasting, beautiful results.
  • Fill-in gaps, thicken and enhance your brows.
  • Creates a natural, effortless look.
  • Forget about meticulously filling-in your brows.
  • Have stunning brows at all times.
  • Increase your confidence.

What are the ombre powder brows

Ombre Powder brows use only machine shading to create a powdered effect. This technique is great for clients who want a well-defined brow shape and like a more filled in brow look. It is good for all skin types, especially oily skin with large pores.

What are the signature brows?

This is our combination brow technique which uses two permanent makeup techniques: microblading and machine shading to create a more defined eyebrow. This is good for clients who prefer a natural wispy look at the front of the brows and a well-defined arch and outer tail.

How long does it last?

The treatment is considered semi-permanent and will fade over time. Touch-ups are recommended once a year to maintain shape, color, and detail. How often depends on a number of factors including:
- Skin type (oily skin fade faster)
- Pigment color used (lighter colors fade faster)
- Sun exposure (over time can cause fading and discoloration of the pigment)
- Metabolism (clients with a faster metabolism will fade quicker)
- Use of daily anti-aging products e.g.- (Tretinoin (Retin-A) & Alpha Hydroxy). These products increase your cell turnover rate and will shorten the life of your cosmetic tattoo

How long does it take to heal?

The eyebrow area will be slightly red after the procedure and color will appear dark for the next 24-48 hours. This is normal for the procedure and part of the healing process. The color will fade by up to 40-50% as it heals. In the following days, the eyebrows will continue to be dark and you will notice slight scabbing. Do not pick at the scabs as this may damage the skin and the outcome of the microbladed area. The eyebrows will lighten up in color as it heals. No down time is required after microblading procedure. It takes approximately 7-14 days for the brows to heal over, and about 6 weeks for the color to fully set in. You'll notice the color is very light right after the two weeks after healing; the skin will have an opaque milky looking tone to it. This is known as milk skin and is common in tattooing. This is due to the tissue still healing from the inside out even though the surface of the skin is healed. True color will reveal itself once healed at the 6 week mark.

How long is the appointment?

Two hours on average. If you choose to do the Ombre Powder or Signature Brow the session can last up to three hours. During your appointment we will consult with you the entire time ensuring we are on the same page. Much of the time is spent measuring and drawing on a symmetrical set of brows and agreeing on your perfect shape and color. The actual procedure itself takes about 30 minutes to an hour. The touch-up appointment will take about an hour.

Is the follow-up appointment included?

In order to ensure that the brows heal perfectly a minimum of two treatments are usually needed 6-8 weeks apart on average. This first 6 week touch-up is included as it gives us the ability to correct any areas that possibly faded or allows the client to make suggestions if they want adjustments with the shape or color. Most importantly, your touch up session is when we refine your brows to ensure it looks perfect and retains the color for the whole year!

Does it hurt?

Everyone has a different pain tolerance but we try to ensure that the process is as comfortable as possible. A topical liquid anesthetic is used during the procedure and reapplied after every pass to prevent it from wearing off. (PLEASE NOTE that if you are a frequent smoker, or have your appointment during your menstrual cycle, the pain level could be intensified.)

Who is not eligible for semi-permanent make-up?

  • Anyone under 18 years of age
  • Pregnant or nursing (we recommend waiting two months after nursing due to hormonal changes for optimal healed results)
  • History of keloids or hypertrophic scarring
  • History of Epilepsy, MRSA, or lupus
  • Chemotherapy (at least a year out and requires doctor's clearance)
  • Diabetic (requires doctor's clearance)
  • Viral infections or diseases
  • Pacemaker or major heart problems
  • Organ transplant
  • Using Accutane (must be off for one year)
  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • Allergy to epinephrine, dermacaine, benzyl alcohol, lidocaine, or tetracaine
  • Currently taking antibiotics (must be off for at least 30 days prior to appointment)

What should I do before and after I get the treatment?

Prior to your procedure, clients are advised of the following:
  • Avoid alcohol, aspirin/ibuprofen, caffeine, and any vitamins that may thin your blood for 72 hours.
  • Avoid tanning so we can assess your natural skin tone.
  • No face scrubs or chemical peels at least two weeks prior.
  • Feel free to come in with your brow makeup on so our technician can see the every day look you prefer. Reference pictures of shapes and colors of brows are always welcomed. We will then work together to create the perfect brows!

  • After your procedure, clients MUST follow these instructions:
  • Wipe brows brows off for the first 5 hours, once every hour using a cotton round that lightly moisten with distilled or cooled downed water that has been boiled water to remove impurities.
  • Apply after care morning & night for the first 7-10 days. Gently wipe away the old healing balm and any lymphatic liquid (clear yellowish liquid) that may have built up prior to the new application. Lightly pat dry with tissue and using a new q-tip, re-apply healing balm to the brows.
  • Do not over apply healing balm.
  • Do not immerse brow area in water for 7 days. When showering, make sure to avoid eyebrow area. When cleaning or washing face, make sure to avoid brows and clean around it.
  • You must avoid working out for 7 days following your Microblading procedure. Light exercising is allowed (minimal sweating), but you must clean the tattooed area with lukewarm water as soon as you are done exercising. The salt in sweat will fade the pigment very quickly and give poor results.
  • Do not put makeup on the brow area for a minimum of 10 days. Microbladed area is an open wound, using makeup may cause infections.
  • Avoid alcohol and aspirin/ibuprofen and any vitamins that may thin your blood for 24 hours.
  • Brow area will feel slightly itchy as it heals and will start to lightly scab over. Do not peel or pick at the scabs as this can affect the outcome and pigmentation.
  • Do not go swimming, tanning or into saunas for at least 14 days.
  • No face scrubs or chemical peels at least 2 weeks after.

How much will I need?

The amount of neurotoxin you’ll need depends entirely on several factors. These include:

  • The type of wrinkles you’d like to treat
  • Your unique aesthetic goals
  • The degree of muscle movement in your face (males typically have stronger muscles and therefore need more toxin)
  • The number of times you've had neurotoxin in the past
  • Your health history

Is there any downtime?

All clients are asked not to work out, get excessively overheated, or sweaty for 24 hours after their appointment. In addition, clients need to avoid being in the sun, saunas or excessive heat for 72 hours, and avoid alcohol and salty foods to limit swelling. Any injection carries some risk of bruising around the injection site. Most clients will have some slight redness and small bumps that can last for several hours. Therefore, it is up to the individual how they want to plan their day.

HOW CAN I PREPARE FOR BOTOX?

It’s best to avoid alcohol, NSAIDS (ex. ibuprofen), aspirin, and blood thinning herbal supplements (garlic, ginger, etc.) starting 72 hours before the procedure to help prevent bruising. It is preferred that clients come in with clean, makeup free skin so that the provider can see the face in its natural state.

What's the difference between neurotoxin and fillers?

It is easy to get these two treatments confused since they are both injectables and can both be used to help reduce the signs of aging. An easy way to distinguish between the two: neurotoxin is for limiting muscle movement, fillers are for filling in and building volume.

Are there any side effects?

Some common side effects include:

  • Muscle weakness near the injection sites
  • Slight bruising
  • Bleeding
  • Redness
  • Swelling

Will it hurt?

The needles used for neurotoxin are extremely small and most clients feel only a slight pinch. Our provider will ensure you are as comfortable as possible for the procedure.

How long will it take?

Most injections will take less than 30 minutes. The procedure can be done quicker if the skin is makeup free and consents are signed through our online portal.

WHO SHOULD NOT GET BOTOX /DYSPORT?

If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, immunocompromised, have certain autoimmune conditions, or allergic to any of the ingredients, you are not a candidate.

How can I get the best results?

Getting the recommended number of units is the first step towards great results . Underdosing to save money will only cause the client to not be happy with their results and/or have their toxin appear to dissipate quicker. In addition, follow the aftercare instructions provided to you via email and on your client portal. Lastly, come in for your recommended maintenance sessions every 3-4 months.

What else can neurotoxin do?

In addition to reducing and preventing fine lines and wrinkles neurotoxin can be used to: Increase the size of the upper lip Smooth lines around the lips Reduce a gummy smile Reduce teeth grinding Reduce the appearance of a frown Reduce the appearance of strong jaw muscles (masseters) And more!

What is the after care for Botox?

Remain upright for 4-6 hours following Botox/Dysport.

Avoid herbal supplements such as Ginko, green tea and anti-inflammatories of any kind for 2 weeks.

No heavy lifting, vigorous exercise or straining for 2-3 hours.

Don’t rub, touch, or press injected areas for 6 hours.

Bruising in the area injected is very normal and expected, especially if injected around the eyes. Bruising can last up to several weeks. Using Arnica may help diminish bruising.

It may take up to 12 days for Botox/Dysport to show fully and take full effect.

A follow-up visit at 2 weeks is suggested to assess results if you are a first time patient.

If your upper lip was treated, you may not be able to drink through a straw or whistle for 2 weeks.

Infection is always a risk of any needle penetrating the skin. It is important to be mindful of everything that touches your face for the 24 hours post injection. It is advised to use a clean pillow case, clean glasses, clean phone, and clean wash cloth in addition to washing the hands before touching the face. Signs of infection may include redness and tenderness in the infected area and fever. Should you develop signs of an infection, please contact us immediately.

What is neurotoxin (Botox®, Dysport®, Jeuveau ® )?

First off, neurotoxin comes in several brand names including Botox®. Neurotoxins are made with Botulinum Toxin Type A which is an injectable cosmetic treatment used to reduce and prevent fine lines and wrinkles. The word “toxin” may sound scary, but it is safe to use by a licensed medical professional. In fact, Botox® has been FDA approved since 1989. Neurotoxins like Botox are created from bacteria, specifically the botulinum toxin. Neurotoxins can be injected into specific muscles using very fine needles to help correct and prevent fine lines and wrinkles of the face. The toxin works by preventing the body’s nerve signals from reaching the muscles. This prevents you from making exaggerated facial expressions and stopping the contractions and movements that play a major role in the development of fine lines and wrinkles.

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are a non-surgical injectable treatment that can help to restore a fresher and smoother appearance. Many are made with hyaluronic acid which is a substance found naturally in the body. This creates instant volume to the skin and can diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Can dermal fillers be removed?

Hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Revanesse and Restylane, can be quickly dissolved using an enzyme known as hyaluronidase. This acts to disperse hyaluronic acid, speeding up the natural breakdown of the dermal filler.

How long will dermal filler last?

Longevity of the dermal fillers depends on factors such as:

  • Muscle weakness near the injection sites
  • Density of the filler
  • Injection area
  • Patient’s metabolism (this can be influenced by gender, genetics, lifestyle, etc.)

For most filler will last at least 6 months, but can last up to 24 months

What is the difference between fillers?

There are several different brands of fillers and they carry several products to be used for different concerns. Each filler can be made with different sized molecules and linked together in different ways. This will mean you will likely have different fillers used depending on the areas being treated and amount of volume needed. Some fillers can create a large amount of volume whereas others are thinner and meant to blend seamlessly under the skin. Most of the known filler brands in the U.S. Both are FDA-approved dermal fillers made from hyaluronic acid. The body will naturally break down the filler over time and filter it out of the body.

What can dermal fillers be used for?

They can be used most effectively and naturally to restore areas of lost volume in the face that occur as we age, which often contributes to sagging and jowling. Strategic and skilful placement of filler can lift and support the face with natural looking results and minimal downtime.

Dermal fillers can soften lines. Cheeks and chins can be remodeled and given more definition. Scars can be minimized, while lips can be defined or enhanced, subtly and naturally.

Are dermal fillers safe?

Dermal fillers are safe treatments when administered by an experienced and medically qualified practitioner. The FDA has approved a range of dermal filler brands for cosmetic use, and as long as these approved fillers are applied to patients by a qualified practitioner, then the risk of side effects are minimal. However, with any injectable there will be risks. Most common side effects include: skin rashes, redness, bruising, itching and swelling. Extremely rare, but more serious side effects include: vessel occlusion causing skin necrosis, blindness, and an extreme allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. Although rare, our provider is trained to handle these complications should they occur.

How will I know which dermal filler is right for me?

At your initial consultation with our skilled nurse practitioner will discuss your concerns and customize a plan tailored to your goals.

How soon will I notice the results?

You should be able to spot the difference immediately. Keep in mind that there will be swelling immediately after and for up to 14 days.

Will the injections hurt?

Most clients can have topical numbing cream applied to the treatment area and feel only slight pinching sensations during the treatment.

What’s the difference between a dermal filler and botulinum toxin?

Both treatments involve injections, but botulinum toxin relaxes muscle movement that results in wrinkles while dermal fillers simply plump out and smooth wrinkles. Sometimes, these treatments are more effective when combined.

How much do dermal fillers cost?

At Modern Beauty Bar we charge by the syringe of filler so an exact cost cannot be quoted until a consult is completed.

How long will the procedure take?

Every procedure can vary depending on the area(s) being treated. At your consultation the provider can provide an estimate of treatment time.

What to expect after dermal fillers?

  • You may take Tylenol to reduce any pain as necessary.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol for 48 hours.
  • Avoid salty foods to reduce the amount of swelling.
  • Avoid exercise for 48 hours.
  • If you had your lips injected avoid drinking from a straw or any movement that will put pressure on the lips and distort the shape for 2 weeks.
  • Until the swelling and redness have resolved, avoid intense heat in the treated area(s). This includes sunbathing, tanning, saunas, hot tubs, and/or hot wax. Also avoid extreme cold such as skiing or other winter sports.
  • To help alleviate bruising, we recommend applying ice to the treated area and/or the topical application of Arnica – a natural ointment commonly used to reduce bruising. You can find this in the natural foods section of your grocery store, or at your local pharmacies.
  • Minimize movement of the treated area(s). However, if there is a visible bump, you can massage the area. Depending on the areas treated and the product used, you may feel “firmness”. These areas will soften and settle with time (usually 1-2 weeks)
  • Sunscreen and makeup can be applied, and the area can be gently washed with a gentle cleanser.
  • Immediately after the treatment, there may be redness, bruising, swelling, tenderness, and/or itching near the injection site. Avoid itching , massaging, or picking around the injection site. This is normal and generally disappears within a few hours to a few days. If signs of an infection or complication develop do not hesitate to reach out.

WHO SHOULD NOT GET DERMAL FILLERS?

You are not a good candidate if you:

  • Have recently used drugs that thin the blood or prevent clotting
  • Have had previous bad allergies, particularly to microorganisms known as gram-positive bacteria
  • Have serious allergies to drugs that have previously required in-hospital treatment
  • Have bleeding disorders
  • Have a known allergy to lidocaine
  • Are pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding

WHAT IS A PLASMA INJECTION?

PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, is a natural product that comes from your blood. A small amount of blood is drawn and placed in a centrifuge, which separates components of the blood. The platelets and the plasma, or the clear fluid, split from the red and white blood cells. The plasma, now called PRP, includes white blood cells and a larger than normal number of platelets, or cell fragments, which contain important growth factors to help boost healing. It can then be used for injection or microneedled into your problem areas to help stimulate hair growth and collagen production in the skin.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AFTER A PLASMA INJECTION?

Immediately following PRP therapy, there is typically some redness and swelling at the injection sites for the first few days, which quickly resolves itself. Several treatments are typically recommended with four to six weeks between each treatment to allow for healing.

HOW LONG DOES A PLASMA INJECTION LAST?

Since PRP therapy works with your body to boost collagen injections, it takes a few weeks for the results to reveal themselves. Once complete, the results last for about a year. Maintenance sessions are recommended annually.

WHAT IS A PLASMA INJECTION USED FOR?

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) stimulates your own collagen to grow for total facial rejuvenation rather than individual wrinkle improvement.

How does it work?

Microneedling with the Skin Pen creates micro injuries in the skin causing your body to send growth factors to the areas treated causing increased elastin and collagen production. The needles are so small they cause the skin to be remodeled without scar tissue formation.

What does it do?

Microneedling is clinically proven to help reduce fine lines and acne scars. Unlike many other treatments microneedling is safe for all ethnicities and skin tones. It can be used on the face, neck, chest, hands, and more. It can also be helpful for surgical scars including c-section scars.

When platelet rich plasma (PRP) is added to the treatments results are even better and can address melasma concerns.

How many treatments will I need?

3 sessions on average. However, during the consultation with our provider more or less sessions may be recommended.

How often are the sessions?

It is recommended to wait about 4 weeks between each session for best results.

Is it painful?

Prior to microneedling topical numbing cream is applied for 30 minutes and this reduces discomfort. Most client’s rate the pain as a 2 out of 10 and report it as a feeling of discomfort rather than pain.

How long is each treatment?

This will depend on the number of areas being treated, but set aside at least an hour to treat the face only, this includes topical numbing time of 30 minutes.

What will typically happen after?

Immediately after the treatment the treated area(s) will be red and may feel tight. It may look and feel like a sunburn. There may be pinpoint bleeding present for the first few hours after treatment. These are all good signs and mean that the inflammatory response is working to create new skin! The following day skin may still be pink and irritated. After 24 hours the micro-injuries will be closed and the face can be gently washed. The calming complex may be applied to help soothe the skin along with mineral SPF 30 or above. Clean makeup can be applied gently if needed after 24 hours

When will I see results and how long will they last?

Immediate smoothing may be seen in the first week. Some people describe it as a subtle glow to the skin. Further improvement will take place for three to six months after the treatment as collagen continues to smooth the skin. Best results are seen when clients receive all their recommended sessions. Adding platelet rich plasma (PRP) can cause even more dramatic and noticeable results!

What is the aftercare?

Immediately following your treatment, you may look as though you have a moderate to severe sunburn. Your skin may appear red and feel warm and tighter than usual. This is normal and will subside after 48 hours. Your Practitioner will also discuss post-procedure skincare following the treatment to help soothe, calm, and protect the skin. Normal skincare can be resumed again after Day 7. Please adhere to the below instructions to ensure the best result and least amount of complications following the procedure:

  • After 24 hours you may use a gentle cleanser on the face and cold water.Gently pat dry the treated skin. Always make sure that your hands are clean when touching the treated area.
  • For 24 hours following treatment, avoid the use of makeup..
  • Avoid the sun for 7 days and apply a facial sun screen daily (broad spectrum UVA/UVB) and use physical sun protection such as sun hats.
